Dryer Not Heating? Causes and Costs in Kansas City

A dryer that tumbles normally but blows cold air has lost its heat circuit, not its motor. On electric dryers the usual suspects are a blown thermal fuse, a broken heating element, or an open high-limit thermostat. On gas dryers it is a worn igniter or failed gas valve coils. Most land in the $150 to $400 range including parts and labor. What matters more than the part is *why* it failed, and the answer is almost always a blocked vent.

Tumbling without heat means the heat circuit opened

A dryer runs two separate things: a motor that turns the drum and moves air, and a heat source. They are wired so the motor must be running before heat is allowed. When the drum spins fine and clothes come out cold and damp, the motor side is healthy and something in the heat side has gone open.

Rule out the free stuff first. Make sure you are not on Air Fluff or Air Dry, which run no heat by design. Then check whether one leg of the 240-volt supply has dropped. An electric dryer runs on two 120-volt legs, and if half the double-pole breaker trips the drum still turns while the heat, which needs both, goes dead. Reset the breaker all the way off and back on, not just from the middle position.

The thermal fuse, and why replacing it alone is a mistake

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device on the blower housing or exhaust duct inside the cabinet. It blows permanently when exhaust air gets too hot, and it has no reset. Once open the heat circuit is dead, and on many models the motor keeps running, which is exactly the cold-tumbling symptom.

Here is what matters. A thermal fuse does not blow because it is old. It blows because the dryer overheated, and the cause is restricted airflow: lint packed in the duct, a crushed transition hose behind the machine, a bird nest or lint mat at the exterior wall cap, or a long run to a rooftop termination that has never been cleaned.

Swap the fuse and leave the vent alone and you get a dryer that works for a few loads, then blows the new fuse the same way. We see it constantly, usually after someone ordered a $15 part online. The fuse did its job. It protected the house. Replacing it while leaving the cause in place removes the protection and keeps the hazard.

Vent runs here deserve it: newer builds in Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, and Liberty often put laundry on a second floor, so the duct is long with several elbows that each collect lint. Older homes in Brookside and Hyde Park often vent a basement dryer through a rim joist with a flap that sticks or ices shut during a hard freeze.

Electric dryers: the heating element and the thermostats

The heating element is a coiled resistance wire behind or beneath the drum. When a coil breaks the circuit opens and there is no heat. Sometimes a broken coil sags against the housing instead, grounding the element, and you get the opposite problem: constant heat even in Air Fluff. Both call for a new element, confirmed with a meter, since a hairline break is easy to miss by eye.

The high-limit thermostat mounts on the element housing and is the protection layer before the thermal fuse. Same root cause when it opens: restricted airflow. The cycling thermostat sits in the blower path and turns heat on and off to hold your temperature setting. Failed open gives no heat, failed closed gives a dryer that cooks clothes.

These parts sit in series, so a proper diagnosis reads each one instead of shotgunning parts. With the back panel off, that takes about ten minutes.

Gas dryers: igniter, coils, and why you do not troubleshoot this yourself

Gas dryers heat with a burner in sequence. The igniter glows, a flame sensor confirms it is hot enough, the gas valve coils open the valve, gas flows and lights, then the igniter shuts off. Any break in that chain gives no heat.

The igniter is a brittle silicon carbide element and the most common gas heat failure. When it cracks, nothing glows and nothing lights. The gas valve coils are small solenoids on the valve body that weaken with heat cycling. The classic symptom is an igniter that glows bright, stays glowing, and goes out with no flame ever appearing. The flame sensor can also fail open, which stops the igniter energizing at all.

What electric versus gas actually costs

The parts are not wildly different in price. The gap comes from labor.

  • Electric heat failures are usually a fuse, a thermostat, or an element: common parts, stocked on the truck, and most are a single-visit repair.
  • Gas heat failures are usually an igniter or coils. Those parts cost more, and the labor includes pulling the burner assembly and verifying flame behavior afterward, so the job runs longer.
  • Gas repairs skew toward the upper part of the $150 to $400 range, electric toward the middle, and a thermal fuse on either type is the cheapest outcome. Access moves the number more than fuel type does.

Plenty of "my dryer is dying" calls turn out to be pure airflow: clothes that need two or three cycles, a laundry room that gets hot, a vent flap outside that barely moves.
