Ice Maker Not Making Ice? Work Through It In Order
When an ice maker quits, the cause is almost always a frozen fill tube, a water inlet valve that no longer opens, or a freezer running too warm to trigger a harvest cycle. Check the bail arm and the freezer temperature first, because both are free. If the freezer is not holding zero degrees, fix that before you touch the ice maker, because the ice maker is only reporting a problem that starts elsewhere.
Why ice makers fail more than anything else in a fridge
An ice maker is the only part of a refrigerator that combines water, electricity, moving parts and a heater inside a compartment held below freezing. It fills on a timer, freezes, warms a mold heater just enough to release the cubes, and rakes them out with a motor, eight to ten times a day for years. Every step is a failure point, and the assembly sits where a small leak instantly becomes a block of ice. That is why ice makers generate more service calls than compressors, fans and defrost systems combined.
Start with the bail arm and the freezer temperature
The bail arm is the wire shutoff arm along the side of the ice maker. Up means off. It gets bumped up by a bag of frozen vegetables or by somebody yanking the bin out. Newer models replace it with an infrared sensor, a paddle, or an Ice Off setting in the control panel, so check the display too.
Next, put a thermometer in the freezer, not in the door. You want 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Most ice makers will not start a harvest until the mold thermostat sees roughly 15 degrees, so a freezer drifting at 15 or 20 makes ice slowly or not at all while the food still feels frozen. A warm freezer usually traces to a door not sealing, a stopped evaporator fan motor, a frost-choked evaporator, or condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair.
There is a Kansas City version of this. Garage refrigerators quit making ice every winter. A standard fridge uses one thermostat in the fresh food section, so when the garage drops into the 30s that thermostat is satisfied, the compressor stops, and the freezer warms until the ice maker gives up. Nothing is broken. Move it inside, or replace it with a garage-ready model.
A frozen fill tube is the single most common cause
The fill tube is the short plastic tube that delivers water from the back wall into the ice mold. If water dribbles instead of shooting in, the last drops sit in the tube and freeze. The next fill hits that plug and freezes a little more, until the tube is solid.
You can thaw it. Unplug the refrigerator, pull the bin, and hold a warm wet towel against the tube, or use a hair dryer on low held well back so you do not melt surrounding plastic. Never chip at it with a knife or an ice pick. The tube is thin plastic and the ice maker wiring runs right behind it.
What matters is what comes next. A fill tube freezes because something upstream is wrong, usually low water pressure or an inlet valve that drips after it closes. Thaw the tube and change nothing else, and it freezes again in a week or two.
Water inlet valve, supply line, and filter
The inlet valve is an electric solenoid at the lower back of the fridge where the house water line connects. It needs roughly 20 psi to fill correctly. Stuck closed, you get no ice. Leaking past its seat, you get an oversized slab in the mold and eventually a sheet of ice on the freezer floor. There is a fine mesh screen in its inlet, and across this metro that screen collects mineral sediment fast.
Work back from there.
- The quarter inch supply line gets kinked flat every time the fridge is pushed back to the wall.
- On French door models the line runs through the hinge, where it can freeze or crimp.
- Older homes in Hyde Park, Brookside and the Northeast often still have a saddle valve tapped into a copper pipe. Those corrode and only partly open.
- The filter is due every six months. An overdue one restricts flow enough to starve the fill, and cheap aftermarket filters often do not seat well enough.
After any filter change, dispense two or three gallons to purge air. Air in the line causes a partial fill, and a partial fill is what freezes the tube.
Samsung and LG deserve their reputation
Samsung French door models with the ice maker inside the fresh food compartment are the ones we hear about most. That ice room is sealed with a gasket and cooled through a duct, and when the seal or the duct defrost falls behind, humid air condenses and freezes around the auger. The tell is grinding at the dispenser, a sheet of ice welded to the bottom of the bucket, and cubes fused into one lump. Many have a forced defrost in the service menu, which clears the frost but does nothing about the seal, duct or heater underneath, so it returns in a few weeks.
LG's pattern is different. Dual and craft ice systems add a second motor and a second fill path, so there is more to go wrong. LG ice makers also have a test button that runs a harvest on demand, a fast way to tell a dead module from a water supply problem.
On either brand, if the freezer is not cold at all, stop diagnosing the ice maker. That points at the sealed system, which runs $450 to $900 and requires our EPA Section 608 certified technicians. Everything else in refrigerator repair sits in the normal $150 to $400 range.
No ice, small ice, and ice that tastes wrong
These three complaints have almost nothing in common, so name which one you have.
No ice at all means the cycle never completes. Work the list above, ending at the ice maker module or its thermostat.
Hollow, small or misshapen cubes means the mold is filling with too little water. That is a restriction, not a failure: an overdue filter, a clogged valve screen, a kinked line, or low house pressure.
Ice that tastes or smells bad is usually not the ice maker. Ice absorbs odors, so a bin that sat unused for a month tastes like the freezer. A filter past its service life is next. Dump the bin, throw out two fresh batches, and judge the third.

Common questions
- How long should a new or repaired ice maker take to start producing?
- Give it 24 hours. A new or repaired unit has to pull the freezer back to temperature and complete several fill and harvest cycles first. Throw out the first two or three batches, since they carry manufacturing residue and anything left in the water line. No ice after a full day means something in the chain is still wrong.
- Is it worth replacing an ice maker, or should I buy a new refrigerator?
- Replace the ice maker. A complete assembly normally lands inside the $150 to $400 range including labor. The math only changes if the refrigerator also has sealed system trouble, because $450 to $900 of compressor work on top of an ice maker on a twelve year old appliance is where replacement starts to make sense.
- Why does my Samsung ice maker freeze up again a few weeks after a defrost?
- Because defrosting removes the symptom, not the cause. Frost builds in that compartment when humid air gets past a failed gasket or duct seal, or when the ice room's defrost heater or sensor is not keeping up. Replacing the failed part is what ends the cycle.
