What goes wrong with Sub-Zero freezers

Frost sheeting the back wall

Ice cream softens, the cabinet frosts, and the fan ticks against ice. The evaporator sits behind the rear panel, so baskets and panel come out. Usually the defrost heater or termination thermostat, and the ice must melt off fully before readings mean anything.

Drawer front out of square

Frost rings the opening and that column runs far longer than its neighbor. Basket rails and the drawer gasket take a beating from heavy loading. Adjusting the drawer front and glides, then replacing a gasket that has taken a set, restores the seal.

Ice maker in the column

Cubes come out hollow or stop entirely while the freezer temperature reads fine. Usually the fill tube icing over behind a slow water valve, or the module and mold heater quitting. Valve, fill tube and module are all serviceable without touching the sealed system.

Warm box, compressor running hot

The column pulls down partway and stalls with a barely cold evaporator. That is a charge or restriction problem in that column's own system, and on a built-in it still beats the cabinetry job replacement turns into.

Learn what a normal run cycle sounds like. Each column has its own compressor, so one that stops resting is warning you days before the food thaws.
