GE and GE Profile ice maker repair in Kansas City
GE uses two genuinely different ice makers that fail in unrelated ways. The older modular unit in the freezer has a rake ejector, a mold heater and a bimetal thermostat clipped under the mold. The French-door models twist a flex tray to crack cubes loose, with no heater at all.
What goes wrong with GE and GE Profile ice makers
- Modular maker with cubes frozen in the mold
- The rake stops partway through its sweep and nothing releases. The mold heater under the tray or the bimetal that switches it has opened, so the ice never loosens from the aluminum before the ejector pushes. The module is replaced as an assembly, since the gears are worn by the time it stalls.
- Flex tray stopping halfway through its twist
- You open the freezer and find the tray rotated partway with cubes hanging out of it. The gear train or drive motor in the flex tray stripped, usually after a cube wedged against the tray wall. The tray comes out as one piece.
- Fill tube iced over
- A cone of ice builds where the water enters at the back of the freezer and fills stop reaching the mold. Either the small fill tube heater quit or the inlet valve seeps between cycles. We check supply pressure too, since a slow fill leaves water in the tube long enough to freeze.
Before you call
Before assuming a part failed, check that the metal feeler arm is not resting on a mound of ice. That arm shuts the maker off mechanically, so one tall cube under it stops production with nothing broken.
