GE grinds food rather than filtering it, using a hard food disposer blade at the pump inlet, so there is no filter cup to clean and no reason to pre-rinse. Drying air leaves through a vent door a wax motor pushes open at cycle end. Both are GE-specific parts that generalists overlook.
What goes wrong with GE and GE Profile dishwashers
- Standing water in the tub
- The cycle ends with a few inches left and you may hear a hum with nothing moving. GE puts the drain pump on its own motor beneath the tub, so it can fail while the wash pump stays healthy. The check valve at its outlet also sticks, letting water siphon back after a normal drain.
- Dishes come out soaked
- The wash is clean but everything drips at the end, plastics worst of all. The wax motor that opens the vent door has failed, so moist air never leaves the tub during drying. It is cheap, and worth checking before anyone brings up the heating element.
- Grinding or rattling during the wash
- A harsh noise that comes and goes usually means the chopper blade is hitting something it cannot grind, like a fruit pit, a bone chip or broken glass. Left running, that debris chews the impeller, so we pull the sump and inspect the blade.
Before you call
Scrape hard debris off plates even though you do not need to rinse them, because the grinder takes the damage from pits, bones and glass. Running the tap hot before starting does more for wash quality here than switching detergent.
