GE and GE Profile range repair in Kansas City

GE gas ranges light the oven with a glow-bar igniter wired in series with a bipolar safety valve, which makes the igniter the current-limiting device in that circuit. The valve only opens when enough current passes through the igniter, so an aging igniter that still glows bright orange can be exactly why the oven takes five minutes to light.

What goes wrong with GE and GE Profile ranges

Oven slow to light, or a whump when it catches
The oven takes longer to reach temperature each month, and eventually you smell gas for a while before it lights. The igniter's resistance has climbed and it no longer draws what the valve needs. Glowing proves nothing; it has to be measured under load.
Cooktop burners clicking constantly
The spark module fires all the electrodes together, so one cracked or soaked electrode keeps every burner clicking after the flames are up. Boilovers and a wet wipe-down are the usual triggers, so we dry the electrodes and reseat the caps before replacing the module.
Door locked after a self-clean cycle
The cycle finishes, the oven cools, and the door stays latched. The lock motor or its cam switch quit at temperature. On these the lock assembly is reached from the top with the range pulled forward and the back panel off.

Before you call

If your GE gas oven still glows but takes longer to light every month, get the igniter replaced before it stops entirely. Gas collecting in the cavity while a tired igniter works up to ignition is the part of this failure that matters.
