What goes wrong with KitchenAid refrigerators

Both compartments slowly warming

The compressor runs without stopping and the whole cabinet creeps up a few degrees. Dust and pet hair have packed the condenser behind the top grille where nobody looks. We comb it out and check the condenser fan while we are in there.

Freezer fine, fresh food too warm

On built-ins with separate evaporators, the fresh-food coil can ice or its fan can stall while the freezer side carries on normally. The complaint is soft produce and milk going off with ice cream still hard as a rock.

Dispenser chute icing shut

A small heater keeps the chute flap free in the door. When it fails, moist room air freezes the flap in place and cubes jam in the chute or dribble out as shavings. The flap assembly and its heater come out through the door panel.

Dead or dimming control display

Older built-in generations use a main control board behind the upper grille that fails from heat soak. Temperatures can still be right while the display is blank, or the unit runs one compartment only.

Before you call

Vacuum the top grille condenser twice a year. Replacing a built-in means cabinet and panel work, so these units are worth repairing long past the point where we would tell you to replace a freestanding refrigerator.
