Maytag dryer repair in Kansas City
The Maytag-built dryers still in service use the halo-of-heat layout, with a wrap-around element in a shroud behind the drum instead of a heater can beside the blower. Anything with an MED or MGD prefix is a Whirlpool cabinet wearing a Maytag badge.
What goes wrong with Maytag dryers
- Wrap-around element burnout
- The drum tumbles, the clothes come out damp and cool. On a halo-of-heat dryer the coil sags against its shroud over the years and opens at that contact point. The element and its insulation come out through the back of the cabinet.
- Drum dropping onto the front bulkhead
- A dry metallic scrape that follows the drum around is the front glides worn through on these older Maytags. Replacing the glides without the felt seal just lets the same noise come back, so both go in together.
- Auto cycles ending after ten minutes
- On the Bravos-style Maytags the two metal moisture bars inside the drum read wetness through contact with the load. Fabric-softener film insulates them, so the control reads dry clothes immediately and shuts the cycle down.
- No heat on a post-2006 cabinet
- MED and MGD dryers use the thermal fuse and cycling thermostat mounted on the blower housing, and the fuse opens when lint chokes the duct run. Clearing the vent is part of the repair, not an upsell.
Before you call
If your Maytag has sensor bars in the drum, wipe them with a little white vinegar every few months. On the older halo-of-heat machines, check the rear element before anyone talks you into a timer.
