What goes wrong with Whirlpool washing machines

Washes but will not spin

The machine agitates normally, drains, then sits there with sopping clothes, sometimes buzzing for a few seconds first. The shift actuator has stripped its gear or lost its position sensor, so the control never confirms the drive reached spin. The actuator bolts to the base of the tub.

Motor runs with no agitation on older direct-drive machines

You hear the motor come up to speed with nothing moving, and there are crumbs of black rubber and white plastic in the bottom of the cabinet. That is the three-piece motor coupler, two plastic forks around a rubber isolator, chewed out. The kit is cheap; overloading kills them.

Overfilling or stopping partway through the fill

The pressure switch reads water level through an air dome and a small hose at the bottom of the tub, and detergent sludge collects in that hose. A blocked or split hose gives the control a false level, so the machine overfills or aborts. Clearing the hose is often the whole repair.

Before you call

If your top-loader agitates fine but will not spin, ask specifically whether the shift actuator was checked before accepting a transmission or basket-drive quote. It fails often here and costs a fraction of either.
